Apparent Changes or Social Changes

Hi all,

I wanted to do something good and help serve the NYC community. That’s why I {serve on the board of // support} Homeward NYC, a nonprofit that provides housing and wraparound care services for homeless young families, seniors, and LGBTQIA young adults.

• Tonight, 58,000 New Yorkers will sleep in the City’s shelter system. Two-thirds of those New Yorkers are mothers and children.
• Adults over age 65 are one of the fastest growing shelter populations in New York City, having quadrupled in the past decade.
• Although LGBTQ folks are estimated at just 7% of the total population, an astounding 40% of all homeless young adults identify as LGBTQ.

In addition to experiencing the trauma of homelessness, many of the individuals Homeward NYC serves have survived family violence or rejection.

When I learned about this need, I knew I had to help.

At each location, Homeward NYC provides housing and services including counseling, case management for residents to access financial and health care benefits, connections to community resources, group activities, and basic life skills. This year, they launched a new program to provide aftercare services in the critical year after move out from family shelter or supportive housing. This comprehensive support empowers homeless persons to build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

I created a fundraiser to support Homeward NYC. This campaign will help homeless persons heal from trauma and build self-sufficiency skills—and you can be a part of it!
